Kilimanjaro + decorating with bold colors

In today's salute to braided rugs and country decor (#8 in the series!), we're talking about dark brown accents and overcoming the fear of decorating with bold colors.

Read our other posts in this series:
Appropriately, today's featured rug is Kilimanjaro.

A dramatic combination of dark and light browns, soft cream and toasty tan! Here are some great examples on Pinterest of dark brown accents.

And we sell dozens of complementing tan and cream accessories that provide a balancing contrast to the rich, dark tones in the Kilimanjaro rugs.

Using color boldly can be challenging! According to HGTV, "the idea behind using color well is it should flow in your house, not be a patchwork of opposite looks." The idea is to create an atmosphere of harmony.

To achieve this harmony, Benjamin Moore recommends selecting colors according to the 60/30/10 rule:
  • 60% of the composition is in one color family (which for most people means neutrals, like cream, grey or taupe).
  • 30% is from a different color family.
  • 10% is a bold "pop" color.
Experiment by bringing in one bold, dramatic accessory, like an accent piece, upholstery fabric or rug. Or, says House Beautiful, start with a very small room. It's not as much of a commitment, and you'll spend less time and money.

Kingston rugs + cheap and easy redecorating tips

Good morning! This is blog post #6 in a series about home decorating. If you're just tuning in, we're doing this series to introduce our new collection of braided jute rugs.

Today, our spotlight is on the Kingston collection of rugs...

The Kingston rugs are bursting with red and beige, but there are also some nice subtle tones of sage and black that you can draw out with the right accessories.

And now, here are a few inexpensive and EASY home decorating tips, for when you don't want to rip out the flooring, but you would like a nice change of pace.
  • Switch out your kitchen canisters. Having something fun and new to look at on your countertops each day can help you forget you'd like to install entirely new countertops!
  • Replace an old rug with a fun, new rug.
  • Buy a funky piece of old furniture at a garage sale and refinish it.
  • It's spring! Throw some fresh-cut flowers in a vase to instantly brighten up the room.
  • Replace your pillows. We've already written a whole post about pillows, but we'll mention it again because it's one of the easiest ways to transform an old piece of furniture into something fun and new.
  • Switch out your hardware. You'd be amazed by how completely a kitchen is transformed with just new cabinet and drawer handles.
  • Paint your front door a fun color!

Coffee braided rugs and some DOs and DON'Ts

Good morning! This is blog post #5 in a series on braided jute rugs and home decorating. Today's focus is on area rug DOs and DON'Ts, and we'll also show you the Coffee braided rugs and some great coordinating items.

Read our other posts in this series:

As we mentioned in the last post, you can use an area rug as an "anchor" to bring together different elements in a room. But consider the size of the rug in relation to the size of the room. You probably wouldn't want to place a small rug under a coffee table when you could place a larger rug under a coffee table, sofa and ottoman, pulling together an entire seating arrangement. (Our braided rugs are available in oval and rectangular shapes, from 20"x30" all the way to 8'x10'.)

Also consider the texture and pattern of the rugs you're using. If you already have a lot of textures and patterns, or "active" design elements in a room, a solid rug may add a calming element to level it out. Alternately, if the room is decorated in more of a minimalist style containing few colors and textures, a bright and patterned rug might be just the right finishing touch.

And don't be afraid to mix patterns and textures! You might choose a rug with a pattern that is dramatically different in scale than the other textures and patterns surrounding it.

Last, consider function. Is the rug purely for decoration or does it also need to be sturdy and stain-resistant? If you're loving the rich brown, black, cream and mustard tones in our Coffee braided rugs, here are a few coordinating items you might also like...

Home makeover, Harvest edition

Hi there!

In case you missed it, we're doing a series of home decorating blog posts to introduce our new line of braided jute rugs.

Read our other posts in this series:
The next pattern in our series is Harvest, and our theme for the day is home makeovers.

Harvest braided jute rugs

In our blog post, A guest-room makeover in 6 easy steps, we offered steps to making over the guest room, but these guidelines can really apply to any room in the house: choose a theme, de-clutter, accessorize with care, re-purpose and rearrange, "deck" the windows with curtains or other window treatments, and "take a step back" to examine the room as a whole.

But how do you rearrange? How can you utilize the same space in a new way?

This is the perfect time to analyze how you use the room you are redecorating, and how much space you need to move around. Especially when you're redecorating a living room or great room, consider how traffic will flow through the room and what areas you use the most. Do family members and guests gather in front of the television, or the fireplace? Is the "weight" of your furniture equally distributed around the room, or does it appear to be "piled" up in one area?

When placing furniture, some find it helpful to sketch out a diagram, while others need to see it in the flesh.

Consider what area of the room might need a rug as an "anchor," but also remember you don't want to over-accessorize. (We'll talk more about rug DOs and DON'Ts in our next blog post!)

Timber Trail + rustic decor

Over here at the Primitive Home Decors blog, we're in the middle of a salute to braided jute rugs, and today our focus is on Timber Trail and rustic decor.

Read our other posts in this series:
Rustic decor is something most often associated with cabins, lake houses and country vacation homes, but we personally love it for any home. The style incorporates neutral and woodsy tones, natural materials, and themes found outdoors and in nature.

Here are a few of our favorite rustic decorating tips from around the web...

From Better Homes and Gardens: Because the wood-clad shell of a rustic home has such drama and presence, dainty or precious furniture can get lost. Instead, choose furnishings that are large in scale and in visual weight. This is the place for an ebony leather sectional, a canopied four-poster, or a dining table that seats 12. Look for elements that use rough-and-tumble materials, such as braided rugs, a kitchen island with a butcher-block top, or light fixtures with punched-tin shades.

From HouseBeautiful.com: More on natural materials and themes. This 'barn' kitchen features reclaimed barn planks and a pot rack made to resemble a wagon wheel.

From HGTV: Warm lighting, natural tones and rustic accessories can give any room a vacation-y feeling.
