Also consider the texture and pattern of the rugs you're using. If you already have a lot of textures and patterns, or "active" design elements in a room, a solid rug may add a calming element to level it out. Alternately, if the room is decorated in more of a minimalist style containing few colors and textures, a bright and patterned rug might be just the right finishing touch.
And don't be afraid to mix patterns and textures! You might choose a rug with a pattern that is dramatically different in scale than the other textures and patterns surrounding it.
